A Perfect Weekend
By: Jeremy | December 7th, 2008Say what you want about todays game in Palermo, but the win was one of many Serie A results that helped our team solidify its position in the standings. With relegation rivals Lecce, Torino, Chievo, and Siena all losing, and the two others, Bologna and Reggina drawing with each other, the matches could not have gone any better. While we did not improve our position in the table, we now sit even with Palermo on 20 points and with Chievo on 9, Bologna on 11, Torino and Reggina each with 12, and Lecce with 13, we are in as good a position as we can be, especially after losing our first five.
When a team is on form or on a streak of wins, results that they wouldnt otherwise get, seem to happen. Today was the perfect example. We are on form, and Palermo is inconsistent. With the match being at home, todays win was not unexpected, albeit a bit lucky. Palermo controlled the run of play and could not finish the few chances it got. Ill admit that Fini was offside and his goal in minute 34 should not have counted, but it was all we needed. Palermo until the last few minutes did nothing to create real scoring chances. How they didnt equalize in the final minutes is beyond me as they missed wide open chances that should have meant an easy goal.
Palermo goes back to Sicily with its tail between its legs. As Cellino so rightly pointed out, Palermo should not expect to beat us because we are only a provincial club. Cagliari is to Sardinia as Palermo is to Sicily. While the results over the years have shown Palermo to be better, Sicily is not any less provincial then Sardinia. But then again, if you ask most Italians, Sardinia should not even be a part of Italy. I was glad to see Cellino shoot the arrogant Palermo chief Zamparinis comments down, even if Cellino sees him as his idle in craaziness.
Palermo will no doubt see opportunity wasted, but both clubs now face similar decisions as we approach the winter transfer window. With safety not really an immediate concern, the question is will either of these crazy managers ante up and buy some players to take their teams up the table. We need another midfielder and possibly a defender, but if Cossu continues his fine play and Canini can get back, who out there can really make a difference that we will bid for.
In all honesty, we are mid table at best even if we are only three points from 6th place. Who are we going to pass? I dont see any of the clubs above us looking like they will drop down. Catania maybe? Udinese, who knows, but with Roma moving up fast and Sampdoria likely to be passing us soon, is it worth the investment in players at this point. Losing the first five makes it tough because our performance since that time, while a bit lucky, really has us in a postion where we should think upward. But reality says that expecting a top half of the table finish would be a bit of a reach but such result would make Allegri Serie A coach of the year.
Cellino needs to take this year and realize that while we do seem to have some talent, and it clearly has performed well, if he truly is serious about us talking about winning more then surviving, he is going to have to bring in some talent over the summer and not the winter. Either way, our mindset is still survival, but if these results keep coming, no matter how lucky they may be, it is our hope the boss steps up and brings in some players so we can really bring some late season excitement to Sardinia.
With four games left in the first half, it is still too early to make that decision what investment will be needed in the winter. We head to Roma next week where points of any kind would be shocking, then home to Reggina where we should take 3 points, the on the road to Inter for a loss, and then a home match against fading Udinese where just a few weeks ago, we would see this as a loss. With their poor form, we might be getting them at the right time. These results could put us back in the relegation mix or keep us right where we are, but for all these great results lately, there are too many teams above us to expect a push for a UEFA Cup spot.
Either way, the fact these possibilities are even a part of this post shows this team is doing something and the fans have to be pleased. This one certainly is. Great win against a pesky Palermo team and now lets head to Roma and thump them.

no disrespect, but that was 3 points undeserved

I would hate to see what would happen when Palermo get relegated to their rightful place. The blogs would be in overdrive over so called Da Vinci code type conspiracies. When the money dries up this serie C team will follow down the road of all the other Sicilian teams. Remember you cant help genetics.

I think that Cagliari spending money this January would be a big mistake. They are about as safe from dropping as they can get at this point in the season.
So they don’t need reinforcements for the save. But, next season you will probably lose Aquafresca so some money saved will need to go towards a forward.
And as you said, a defender and a midfielder AT LEAST is still needed to consider this a mid-table fighter next season.
So, Cagliari needs to find an additional sponsor, save money… and perhaps sell a player or two… in my opinion.

Jeremy, nice overview. I watched the game after the 50 min and did not see any ref mistakes. I do see that the Palermo fans are upset but their team is totally to blame for not equalizing or missed opportunities, as the Cagliari defense was granting them chance after a chance.

Palermo fans want to say the refereeing was bad because of one bad call on an offside. Yes, an important offside, but how many chances do you need to finish before you score. We didnt deserve three points, but Palermos poor finishing means they didnt either. After losing Amauri, expecting to go up in the standings is unrealistic. They are right where they should be. Mid table.

And Cagliari will eventually end up where they belong. Serie B

Lucky win maybe, but palermo’s finishing should certainly be the agenda item. I like the fact that Palermo and their fans honestly believe that they are rightfully a Serie A powerhouse. They are certainly going through a purple patch in their history but c’mon history doesn’t lie. The genetics comment by classifier was a bit harsh though.

Who else has already beat Roma, Juve, and Milan this season?
I dont think we are a powerhouse, far from, but getting screwed has been our theme this year….
P.S. SEE PALERMO PAGE

KJ, I have seen the palermo page, and yes it unfortunately typifies the calibre of your fan base. Just scrolling through other blogs you dont see the level of personal or somewhat ignorant attacks on administrators, refs, players and even their own. Does Serie A need a club like Palermo? I think it belongs but it is also walking a fine line in bringing the game into disrepute, which mind you comes with steep penalties from the FIGC.

Apparently you just started reading..Many blogs, Roma, in particular, have written similar things about unjust officiating.
And don’t insult our fan base…We deal with more shit than you know, i.e. idiots like “classifier.” We may not have the trophy case of some, but we have more knowledge and pride than any club around..

Fuck the FIGC

And knowledge and pride will certainly add to your trophy cabinet when the money finally dries up.

Furthermore KJ, I worry about Serie A teams without ongoing committed sponsors. Many of us who support tier 2 teams such as Cagliari, Palermo and Siena to name a few, are heavily reliant on the sponsorship dollar. Sponsors shy away from clubs involved in off field antcis and critisism towards governing and regulatory bodies because it portrays the club and therefore the sponsors in a negative capacity. Check out the following link regarding European Football in general and then ask yourself why you believe Palermo doesn’t have a major shirt sponsor.

Siena and Cagliari are not tier 2…they are relegation fighters year in, year out….
With the exception of last year, Palermo has played European football the prior years…
Sponsorship? Palermo always has a sponsor the 2nd half of the season.. Zamparini is very selective in sponsors, why Im not quite sure

ha, lumping Cagliari and and Siena with Palermo is quite funny. What’d you guys buy in the offseason? A new mixed breed, 3 legged pitbull to roam around the training ground while Matri and Larrivey fix their ponytails?

ricci you are absolutely right. I incorrectly “lumped” Cagliari with Siena and Palermo. Cagliari is the odd one out – Scudetto 1970 and a semi final appearance in the UEFA Cup 1994 losing to a gloriuos Inter side.
I will grant you that our offseason purchasing has been shite. Jeremy has correctly pointed out that our under investment may work in our favour as teams that have over capitalised and do not achieve the spoils of Europe will fall away rapidly under the current strain of economic conditions.

wow, i cant believe my eyes: kj complaining about bad reffing?!?! it was just mere weeks ago that he was lambasting people on the roma blog for pointing out the same and urged to accept the defeat ‘like a man’ rather than looking for excuses like bad officiating. i guess that would explain why kj cant accept the defeat.
as for ‘tier 2′ teams, i dont think it’s a stretch at all for cagliari and palermo to be in the same company, particularly when taking into account the track record of both clubs historically (i make the comparison on historical grounds given kj’s comment about “year in, year out”). cagliari has won a scudetto and has been marginally more ’successful’ in europe as well (went pretty deep in uefa cup from what i remember). also, prior to their recent serie a promotion 4(?) years ago, palermo spent the previous 30-odd years between serie c1, c and b while cagliari were playing a good chunk of their seasons in serie a during that same stretch.

Jeremy is going to shit himself when he sees the number of comments for what can only be described as a fairly mediocre post (no offense Jeremy). Is this a record number of replies in the Cagliari blog?
