Cellino admits to being cheap
By: Jeremy | January 17th, 2008My mother always told me that if you buy something on the cheap, you pay in the long run so therefore spend the extra money and buy quality. That does not mean you need a Mercedes for a car or that the only players you have on your soccer team look like AC Milans roster, but purchases can be made which can meet your objectives without wasting money on an inferior product. Obviously Cagliari President Cellino has never talked to my mother. Today he crawled out from under his rock and basically let everyone know in no uncertain terms that without new players, we are going down, yet he is not willing to buy those players because they cost more then he wants to pay. Way to get the club motivated Massimo.
While he may be talking in terms everyone else involved at the club already understands and likely accepts, he needs to keep his mouth shut. He basically insulted Storari and Jeda, the new transfers, while also telling the rest of the team he has no confidence in them to do anything to save the season. He wants to bring in better players then what he brought in, but is unwilling to meet the asking price and is whining about the price of these potential transfers. Maybe the asking price goes up when a potential buyer is a desperate fool or just not liked or maybe it is Cellinos way of trying to cover himself when he had no real intentions to open up the purse strings and bring in some players who can save the season.
While it is not always good to be overly optimistic and look things through rose colored glasses, you certainly dont speak to the media and say we arent good enough as we stand, I brought in players who werent my first choice because I got them cheap, and I am not going to do any more buying because the players I want are too expensive. While you never want to overpay for anything in life, owning a sports team is different. Sometimes you have to take risks and pay the little extra not only for the fans and your love of the team, but because not doing so will cost you more in the long run when you are relegated. I know tough decisions must be made when you are in a relegation fight, but Cellino makes his money elsewhere so he can spend it on his hobby the football club. To say players are too expensive when he isnt even looking at top tier real expensive players is really pathetic.
With a big game coming up against Reggina, tension is high and the players dont need negative comments coming from its President. Time will tell if the players, new and old, can come together and keep the fans hoping for safety, but Cellinos comments are the latest straw added to the camels back which is about ready to break.

Why isn’t Cagliari going for a Mauro Esposito return!
It’s not like he’s playing in Roma and his return would be a positive thing for the Cagliari Supporters
BTW, Nice work Jeremy!

Good question Marco. I think teams just like to horde players as they are always concerned about injuries and poor performance from the first 11. I think Serie A has turned into a league where teams that are at the bottom early cant get the players the need to climb up or dont have players on their bench who can step in.
