Everythings Not Lost
By: Jeremy | May 4th, 2009Sometimes you just need to take your hat off to your opponent and salute them for their fine play. We can analyze things all day long, but when you get beat 5-1, there is not much to say other then props to Palermo. Their play on Sunday shows why they are one of the more entertaining teams to watch in Serie A. They showed a little bit of everything from a great free kick to a tricky finish, to even a little bit of garbage/scramble type scoring. When a team can incorporate all of these things into a game, they are likely to win. Congrats to Palermo and they now have to be considered the favorite for the sixt spot.
While Cagliari missed a couple of early chances, the free kick that made it 2-0 was the difference. That kind of goal just takes your heart out. While Jeda pulled one back to make it 2-1, showing Cagliari still wont quite, the third goal could have been prevented, but once it was put in, asking to come back was a bit too much. This was one of those days where the other team was just a step or two better in pretty much all aspects of the game. We can get upset, but it might be a reminder that as good as we have been, we just arent ready to finish in a european spot.
While we can get down about such a humbling defeat, lets look at the brightside. We are still only four points out of europe after Romas lackidaisical draw at home to Chievo. They dont want to solidify anything and they are going to give teams like Cagliari reason to think this year is not over yet. We get them at home next weekend and a win will get us back in the conversation. While Palermo seems strong, they are still a team prone to gaffes so dont assume they will win out despite the easy schedule the rest of the way.
While Allegri was no doubt disappointed, he still seems to be one with a positive upbeat attitude who does not think it is wrong to pursue european dreams even if the odds are slim. What does not help is Cellino opening his mouth at the wrong time and stating that he never believed the team had the talent to make europe. Just when you think he is calm and in his hole with his mouth shut, he rears his ugly head with demoralizing comments. Its fine to think what he said, but dont say it after a bad loss. A win in that game probably has him saying the opposite which are what makes his comments so bad. If he is not careful, he will lose his coach to a big club, contract or not.
While the team will spend the week getting up to play Roma, fans will know we can get a win in this game. While Roma, like Palermo, has the talent to lay the hammer down and dominate, if they lose to us, we can still have things to discuss the rest of the year, even with difficult games remaining against a suddently motivated Reggina and Udinese, and the top team in Serie A in Inter, who may just send out a B lineup now that the Scudetto is theirs.
While I am frustrated by the loss, it is not heartbreaking like other games have been. We can learn from it and our season is still not over. Lets see Allegri work his magic and get the team in the right frame of mind for what is a winnable game against Roma.

Jeremy – I definitely did not expect my team to play the way they did yesterday. It’s a tough loss for you guys, but, if anything, it has not taken anything away from your team. Cagliari has consistently proven to bounce back this season. Best of luck to you guys.

I think what separates Cagliari from almost any team I remember watching, is that when they concede a goal or two they keep their heads up and continue to play their own game. They never once looked short of confidence. You were absoultely right Jeremy, Palermo put on a great show and they deserve a lot of creidit for a faultless attacking performance. But watching Cagliari yesterday made me proud as well as sad since most Serie A teams would completely crubmle after the second goal. With an under-par squad we showed real resolve and belief in our game and it bodes very well for the future of this team. Allegri is still the man.

If I had a Cagliari kit, I would be wearing it all week..
It really has little to do with a Europa spot, more just hate for Rioma.
On the game, I think Ballardini’s take down fired up our squad to a whole new level

Cellino and Zampa aren’t buddies by chance.

Cagliari didn’t play badly last night. I thought you were more or less neck-to-neck with us quality-wise. It was your defense that let you down. This game surely will come back and haunt Canini for a while.

Cmon, Poindexter, waiting for you to crawl out from under your rock.. Surely, you have some comments

Clearly outplayed. Im more concerned about our financial future as it appears our major sponsor Tiscali and SKY may not renew its contract with the team.
There will be a report tabled by Delloites at the end of June highlighting certain clubs financial dealings. Our club is about 1 of 7 clubs who will be under scrutiny. Damn GFC!!!

Palermo was just too tough for us, especially on their home field. To expect us to go from barely surviving one year to Europe the next is a bit much. Palermo has established themselves as a European participant. We have improved greatly but are still a step behind. Its not over yet, but expectations need to be tempered. Even if Cellino is right, he needs to be quiet as the teams mentality must be full belief they can win most games. Like Poindexter says, we have other worries. I am still not convinced that Allegri is back next year. If Milan or Juve offer him the job, he leaves. For now lets just give Palermo credit and concentrate on Roma. If we cant make Europe, I would rather Palermo make it then Roma.

there are loads of reports that napoli is after conti, acquafresca maybe marchetti as well could you tell me a little about what type of player conti is? i know marchetti is a quality keeper and acquafresca is going to be a top notch striker but know little about conti?

Conti is a great leader. I think all the talk about him going to Napoli is one of those typical May rumours with no substance. As for Marchetti I think the club will certainly use him as a bargaining chip and leverage that with Juve’s urge to sign a backup for Buffon. To answer your question Alex these players managers are seeking long term contracts with bigger clubs.

Conti is not going anywhere. He is the heart of Cagliari and has been there almost as long as Lopez. Now if a big club came calling maybe, but hes not making a lateral move to a club like Napoli. Marchetti wont leave for a team that is not playing in Europe but if Juve or Milan want him, they will get him. Acquafresca is simply a bargaining chip to be used to get a big name striker to Inter. If he ends up at Napoli or any club that does not play in Europe it will be because Inter needed him to make a deal to get what they wanted. This lack of control is why his agent wont shut his mouth.

Tiscali has a new owner with Italian private equity firm BS Private Equity snapping up the company for a reported 60 million.
An announcement will be made on the official Cagliari Calcio website in the next few weeks confirming a reported 5 year sponsorship partnership with Tiscali. SKY is also now interested in re-signing pending redistribution of Serie A TV rights and a major 3rd sponsor from automotive industry is keen to sign also. It appears that many sponsors are sniffing around now as the whole TV rights issue has been resolved. I hear Siena has signed a massive agreement which involves the naming rights of their stadium
Macron who are our official uniform/jersey suppliers will continue to manufacture and poorly market our uniforms.

In fact the replica shirts have just gone back on sale as of this week in Cagliari. This whole season I haven’t been able to get hold of an official shirt because of “spornsor disagreeement”.
Lets hope macron make a better fist of the design next year as well. The home shirt is certainly not the most aesthetically appealing shirt on the market in my opinion.
