Fiorentina-Cagliari Preview
By: Jeremy | December 22nd, 2007Even if there still does not seem to be a coach in place(Sonetti really never left and to me is still the coach)and there is a divided dressing room because of the Foggia/Marchini row, the games must still be played. Travelling to face a Fiorentina side that has struggled recently but probably still believes it has a chance at Champions League football, does not make it any easier for Cagliari. No matter how poorly Fiorentina has played recently, there is nothing to suggest Cagliari has a chance to earn points in this match.
Although it seems Foggia is back in training, I would be surprised to see him play in this game. Without him, there is no one who can get the ball from the packed in backline to either Matri or Acquafresca with a real chance to score. Absent a freak play or a breakdown by the Fiorentina defense after a long ball, without a midfield workhorse or two, Cagliari simply cannot threaten the Fiorentina goal. Foggia and Biondini are the two most important players on the team because of their work rate in midfield and without them, offensive chances will be few and far between.
Fiorentina with Mutu and crew will put enough pressure on the Cagliari backline, that even if they are not in top form, a goal will eventually come sapping whatever spirit Cagliari may be trying to show. The result and flow of play will be similar to the Inter match, but with Cagliari playing on the road, the result could be a little worse for them.
Expect a tight first half with Cagliari creating no offensive chances and doing everything to keep it 0-0. If they can score an early goal on a freak play as they did against Milan, a result is possible, but as soon as Mutu creates a chance for himself or a teammate, the game will be over.
With Cagliari in turmoil and everyone at the club waiting for January to see what happens with Foggia, the coach, and potential new transfers, this game will be even more of a chance for Fiorentina to get an easy three points. In a top to bottom tough Serie A, playing Cagliari couldnt come at a better time for the Viola.
As much as I would love for Cagliari to use all the turmoil as a rallying point to get a surprise result, I dont see it. Final Score 3-0 for Fiorentina.

Sonetti is back, man! It’s all good now, right? He talked about Foggia “training well” yesterday, I wonder if that means he might play — it seems like he’d have said something with more wiggle room if he was going to sit again. Maybe?

It looks like Sonetti is back ie never left and Foggia seems to be counted on to play. Maybe a showcase for a January transfer? Even if things off the pitch settle down, without some wins, the hole will quickly become too deep to dig out of. Atleast it seems like some good news. Lets see how they do. Maybe Fiorentina is tired from the UEFA Cup.

What a soap opera with Foggia. Do the Cagliari fans think he’s coming back at all in the 2nd half of the season?
