Is Relegation a Foregone Conclusion?

By: Jeremy | October 1st, 2008

Is tough being a Cagliari fan. You want the players to win some games, but you know going in that they are typically outmanned and the individual brilliance that often wins games simply is not there. After the loss to Lecce, a team that should be considered a relegation candidate and therefore beatable if you believe coach Allegri, we have now lost our first five Serie A games. Here is a stat for you: no team in the history of Serie A has lost its first five games and not been relegated. I guess that means we will be in Serie B next year.

Its pretty sad to be talking relegation after only five weeks. With teams like Reggina on one point, Bologna on three, and Chievo, Torino, and Siena all on five points, its not like we are so far out of it that we should just stop playing. What that stat really says is that if you are bad enough to lose your first five games, while it may not put you that far behind because its only five games, its a sign that you are a bad team and as the weeks pass, the team will fall further behind. I guess a long season is really torture when you feel like you cant even talk a little smack because you are so far behind.

Its hard to disagree with that thought as the results seem to mirror themselves each week. We cannot score, wwe cannot get a lead, and as soon as we fall behind 1-0, the other team just plays out the game with no threat from us or we give up another goal because we are pressing so hard for the equalizer. I dont think our players have gotten worse, we just lost Foggia and Storari and most importantly, the other teams have improved. If you are a team that is typically in a relegation battle every year, you think ownership would be even more aware of the need for offseason acquisitions. Cellino just stuck his head in the sand this summer and got no new players and allowed a popular coach and a player he could have purcahsed on the cheap to leave. Its the same old story and I post the same old stuff.

Until there is something positive to post about, it is really just a bunch of complaining by me and wondering when the ax will fall on Allegri. Cellino seems to say he is not firing Allegri because the alternatives are worse. I dont believe that. I mean hes a guy who will bring in an old Nedo Sonetti in a hearbeat when things are bad. Maybe Kevin Keegan would hang out in Sardinia for awhile.

All the negativity and we get to see AC Milan come to Sardinia on the weekend. Six losses in a row is likely but atleast the game will be on TV and I get to see up close how bad we suck.

I dont see Allegri lasting much longer. Even if you bring in a nobody, change is what is needed to see if maybe it helps get some results. I dont think it does, but atleast it gives me something to talk about rather then same shutout losses.

Part of me hopes things will get better, but it is getting tougher and tougher to wait it out. How can we have ZERO points? Pathetic.

To be fair we were the 1st Team bottom at Christmas to stay up.
