Keeping Up
By: Jeremy | April 20th, 2009Give Cagliari credit. For all the disappointment that we feel because of the results with Genoa and Fiorentina, the team still manages to win games that they should if they want to take that next step up the standings. Iif they continue, they will see their games with Palermo and Roma mean something when it comes to determining if the team can make Europe next year. Who would have thought that?
The Napoli game was a game of two halves. Cagliari got off to a quick start with a goal in minute five on a nice off balance header by Jeda. Not an easy finish. Cagliari continued to create chances and Matri, given the start over Acquafresca, still shows that finishing is not his strong suit. While he did not have great chances when compared to past games, he still shows his ability to be in the right spot, but his inability to finish. If Acquafresca had has positioning and enthusiasm, he would score 25 goals. If Matri had Acquafrescas finishing ability, he would probably score more. Too bad we cant combine these two into one player.
The second half was basically the Marchetti show. He stopped numerous chances that a rejuvenated Napoli squad threw at him and Napoli has to feel like the should have atleast equalized this game. Cagliari looked more to counter and Lazzari had a beautiful finish near the end to make the final 2-0. Great contributions all around and considering the missing players, this was a result that showed Cagliari is a much better team then in years past and truly deserves some matches where it can control its own destiny for Europe. They may yet get them.
The difference this year from years past is that we now expect to beat mid table teams where as before any points, even at home, was cause for celebration. Now we must figure a way to to beat the next level of teams on a regular basis ie Genoa Palermo Lazio et al. To do this we must not only get better, but we must be able to keep and improve our talent, which is not going to be easy.
Despite our win, Palermo, Roma, and Lazio also won meaning we did not gain ground on anyone. What matters is that Palermo heads to Milan, Roma plays Fiorentina, and we travel to Sampdoria. While Sampdoria is no pushover, this will be our next opportunity to solidfy a position for Europe. If we can beat Samp, we will play Palermo and Roma where we can make Europe with some good results.
As with all teams that continue to improve, certain players will be on the big clubs radar. Now it seems Allegri is also being looked at by a big club. Milan, who seems to want Marchetti for their future goalie, is now talking about Allegri to replace Ancellotti who is supposedly headed to Chelsea. While rumors in european soccer are like the gossip on a junior high playground, we cant ignore that with improvement comes the loss of players and a manager. For now I wont worry about it as these types of situations sure beat trying to figure out where we will get points in the final weeks to survive another year in Serie A.
I am continually amazed that after an offseason that seemed so disappointing after such a strong finish, that we ended up with a better team. Can a goalie and a manager make that much of a difference? Sure, but we have to note the improvements of many players including Jeda, Cossu, Canini, and Biondini as the big reason why we have moved up. Marchetti has done just as much if not more then Storari did for us last year. If we can keep what we have and replace Acquafresca with a talented striker, we might be even better next year.
For now, we still must beat Samp next weekend if we want the Palermo and Roma matches to mean anything. Getting a win on the road to Palermo will probably be asking more then getting a home win against Roma, but we need momentum and a reason to play so we cannot let up against Samp, who while tough at home, has clearly packed it in.
Great win and lets keep it going next weekend.

“we cant ignore that with improvement comes the loss of players and a manager.”
I suggest that you should acknowledge the fact that with improvement of position, more transfers will be open to play for you.
You might lose a couple players… but if you can hold onto the coach, you also might gain a few players. If you make it into Europe, you might gain a few more who are willing to join you.
Living and working on a beautiful island in the Mediterranean isn’t exactly a hard sell, at least not to me… And playing in Europe will attract quite a few players and some teams will loan out players who they want to get experience in the competition.
If your team plays this smart, they will be in an excellent position – not next year, but the year after.

Allegri has signed until 2011 at Cagliari. He doesn’t strike me as the sort of personality who would dishonour a contract, and in the unlikely event that he does, a presumably top club will have to lay down a lot of cash to buy him out.
MAD, I take your point about loan players but your comment about Sardinia is slightly off the mark. The island is indeed beautiful but the city of Cagliari is not…it’s actually very poor and very dirty. The polished/chic Milans and Florences of this world offer a lot more to a millionaire footballer than Cagliari…that’s just an observation from having lived here almost a year.
I am going to stick by my guns and say that qualifying for the UEFA cup could be near on disastrous for a club like Cagliari. I doesn’t mean I don’t want them to…god knows I would love to watch them play in the UK especially. It’s just that it’s a competition which takes so much and gives so little in return. If we do make it then I couldn’t say how the transfers would balance themselves out. Perhaps 3 in 3 out, but I would like to think the suqad will remain fairly the same. I suspect Marchetti will be on his way whatever happens.

To be honest, Cagliari is this year’s true beauty in Serie A. Fantastic players, unexpected results…and that Lazzari goal this weekend…

I hope both Palermo and Cagliari make Europe next season. They deserve it more than AS Sketchy-oma and ACF Fortunosa.

Yes the dream of UEFA cup football is still alive. For me it’s very refreshing to see other teams doing well in Serie A. But what I also notice is despite their amazing turnaround in fortunes this season culminating in their historic win at Juventus how little media coverage Cagliari actually gets.

Making Europe would be great and I do not see how it hurts us if we did. You never turn down European football. We will lose players but it may make it slightly easier to get some good players to give us a second look. We will lose Marchetti at some point, but lets hope we have him for another full year.
The key game will be at Palermo. I think its asking a lot to get points from them in that game as they just are playing so well. But its one game and anything can happen.
No matter what, this sure beats discussing how to avoid relegation.

Jeremy, my worry about Europe is that we could get relegated from Serie A next year if we fight too hard on the European front. It’s happened to two other teams before in recent years in Italy. Cagliari is not a big club and they have committments. Playing in the UEFA cup doesn’t make you a big club over night.
It may be all entirely irrelavent anyway as I’m watching Juventus bottle it against Lazio in the Coppa Italia semi final. With Inter pretty much out of the door, it would mean a Lazio-Samp final meaning no UEFA cup spot for 7th place. Beating Palermo is one thing but catching Roma/Fiorentina is another…not to say it can’t be done.

7th place won’t qualify for Europa League… I think Cagliari’s dream died this afternoon. Too bad, it would have been fun to see the team stick together for at least one more season. But I think Acquafresca was always going to be recalled to Inter anyways.

Here is my two bobs worth on the UEFA Cup. Making the revamped UEFA Cup next year will be far more lucrative for participating clubs than the current setup. First and foremost TV rights will be centralised just like the current EPL and Champions league.
Its no secret the bigger clubs in Italy rape the smaller clubs when it comes to the distribution or lack of TV rights. Making some serious coin by participating in this Europa league will only be beneficial in attracting and retaining players. The likes of Lazio, Palermo, Atalanta, Cagliari, Napoli et al should not be compared to minnows like Chievo who destroyed their Serie A status through lack of depth.
I think the European places are all sewn up anyway with Roma clinching that 6th spot. No Italian team will get a start with the fair play ruling and the Intertoto Cup is now just a distant memory. It would really piss me off though if an inconsistent team like Samp jags the Italian Cup and qualifies, but thems the rules.
