New Coach..Same Problems

By: Jeremy | December 27th, 2007

It seems that Davide Ballardini has been hired to be the next manager to hop on the Cagliari coaching carousel. Hes young like Giampaolo, but other then coaching in the Parma youth system, I think his experience is limited. Maybe thats a good thing, but it is another reminder that Giampaolo should never have been fired. Asking a young inexperienced coach to come in and save the season is tough, but it was clear the old guy Sonetti just wasnt up for it. Despite Sonettis experience, he was not the right choice even if he did not deserve to be fired once he was brought in. I was hoping they would bring in Hector Cuper. He is one of my favorite coaches after seeing him work a second half miracle in Mallorca a couple of years ago when relegation seemed all but assured. His age and personality may not be the right fit now, but it would have been worth the gamble. They can bring in the young inexperienced coach next year when they are in Serie B.

Getting a coach in place is the first step to try and create some stablity at the club, but it does not change the fact there needs to be some fresh talent brought in if the team is going to have a chance to avoid relegation. Unless Cellino brought in a name coach who had the power to lure players, which was never going to happen, then the choice of coaches is not going to matter much when it comes to the ultimate goal of survival. I think it is 50/50 odds at best that Billardini lasts to the end of the year. Cellino is just too crazy.

Absent one or even two new stirkers who are better then what they have, plus keeping Foggia, getting Biondini healthy, and adding another midfielder, the results are not going to change. That is asking a lot when so many teams are looking for reinforcements and likely have more money to spend then Cagliari.

Lets see what happens in the transfer window, but it is good to get any coach in place at this point just so the team can move forward.

The Italian wikipedia says Ballardini coached Cagliari for eight games in the 2005-2006 season — is that a lie, or was it just such a short tenure that no one remembers it happened?

It would be a shame to see Cagliari go down again, but I can’t see them staying up this year. Isn’t there a way to get rid of Cellino?

Cagliari went through four managers that season, ending up with Sonetti, who saved them from going down (thanks largely to Suazo). It was as if the club couldn’t except the fact that Zola had retired over the summer.
