The more things change…

If I thought the team hit bottom previously, Sundays game indicated that Cagliari had further to fall with Serie B now looking inevitable. Everything seemed to be lining up for a game that might turn Cagliaris season around. New coach, new enthusiastic players, seemingly good spirit, home match with recent history favoring the home team, and players who want out still on the team and in the lineup or ready to play.

It was such a good day to be positive and Udinese made it even better by going down a man in the first 30 minutes. Surely at that point, you would expect a result of some kind. Nope. Instead they give up a goal to 10 man Udinese and spend the rest of the game creating some chances and preventing more goals. Another typical one goal home loss. They obviously could compete with a top team in Serie A, but competing without results means relegation. This has been the story of their season. At some point these close games where you should get points atleast half the time but end up with nothing put you in a position to where you are seven points clear of safety. Absent a winning streak, this will be too much to overcome even with half the season to play. There really isnt much analysis to provide on yesterdays match as the flow of the game and the results have become too predictable. The new players seem to provide some hope and I think Storari can be a good keeper, but without offensive talent, you simply are not a threat to the other teams who will therefore push forward and pound your goal until they break through. Matri and Larrivery are terrible and should be dumped and Acquafresca will whine his way out of town before he turns into a star so he is really not someone to count on for the future. The strikeforce definitely needs some help. Is Jeda the answer? You cant judge after one game. After watching Milan finally put together an offensive formation, I wonder if maybe Cagliari might do the same and take some risks. The continued conservative play should no longer be an option as they must win. Losing 1-0 or 4-0 still gives you no points.

Next week is the final game of the first half against the worst team Serie A in my opinion. Even on the road, a win is a must. Siena, Reggina, and Torino are the three clubs with Cagliari that will fight for 17th place and another season in Serie A and Cagliari is very close to becoming this years Ascoli. You want the matches at the end to mean something, but it may be the last ten games are of no interest to anyone which is a shame for a fan of any team. I will keep hoping something magical happens and everything comes together in time for a winning streak of some kind that can actually make the final games of the season meaningful.
